EuropeSpa med is the seal of quality of the European Spas Association. ESPA decided for the EuropeSpa quality initiative back in 2006 following rapid growth on the market for health resorts and spas following the opening-up of Eastern Europe. The market throughout Europe has an estimated volume of €30 billion and is served by approximately 18,000 providers, about 6,000 of whom operate internationally. Since their levels of quality vary greatly, making it difficult to classify them in terms of price, EuropeSpa has brought comparability and hence transparency to the market.

Based in Brussels, ESPA is the umbrella organisation of 20 mostly national health resort and spa associations. The European sector is made up of around 4,000 companies in Europe with annual turnover of approximately €20 billion and a workforce of 500,000.
